Why Togo?
In 1925, a deadly diphtheria infection had gripped the territory of Alaska. To combat the outbreak, a Sled dog team was assembled to deliver antitoxin from Nenana to Nome. A Siberian Husky named Balto completed the journey’s final 30 miles, and was heralded as a hero.
Only later was it discovered that another husky, known as Togo, had run the first 250 miles of the trek.
Without Togo’s herculean effort, neither Balto’s leg of the journey nor the ultimate successful delivery of the antitoxin would have been possible.
